Independent Star Trek film Axanar on hold!

It looks like Star Trek fans will have to wait a little longer before the well-anticipated small-budget, independent film "Axanar" is released. Axanar Productions has been hit with an intellectural property lawsuit.

Both Paramount Pictures Corp. and CBS accuse the producer Alec Peters and film makers of deliberately using copyrighted material in the film.

Specifically, the complaint, filed in a California federal court, alleges blatant intellectual property infringement, stating that Axanar has various copyrighted elements of the original Star Trek and clearly has the "look and feel like a true Star Trek movie."

The movie plot allegedly takes place 21 years before the original Star Trek and is centered around Starfleet captain Garth of Izar.

In a recent statement, Peters claimed that the goal was never to profit off of so-called copyrighted material but to "create new Star Trek stores to share with fellow fans." He went on to state that "Axanar is a love letter to a beloved franchise."

Production for Axanar was set to begin this month. Given the pending suit, it's unknown when or if the film will be produced.
