Appeals court ruling: Samsung phones infringe on Apple's Patent

On October 7, a federal appeals court ruled in favor of Apple, Inc. regarding infringement of several patented design elements. The defendant, Samsung Electronics Co., will need to pay a $199.6 million award to Apple.

This is one of two current Patent infringement lawsuits between the two technology giants. The second suit is still pending in the Supreme Court and won't be resolved for several more months.

This lawsuit covered the following patent infringements of the iPhone design features:

  • Sliding to unlock phone
  • Auto-corrections
  • Quick links of recognized phone numbers, addresses and dates

The judges on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit ruled 8 to 3 in favor of Apple. This ruling overturned the previous appeals court's decision in favor of Samsung in February. The original federal case rendered a verdict in May 2014.

The full appeals court said the original 3-judge panel relied on information that wasn't raised in the appeal or in the original trial record to render judgment. The three judges who were in the original panel are the ones who voted against this most recent appeal.

This case is the latest in a fierce Patent battle between Samsung and Apple that has been going on for five years. The next lawsuit relates to the case design and colorful graphic interface that both companies use on their smartphones and tablets. The oral arguments from both sides began on October 11. The verdict could have implications for Intellectual Property disputes across the technology industry, and decisions made by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
