Patent trolls continue to strike legal blows

Intellectual property is supposed to be an institution, one that we can trust and have faith in. Creators, inventors and companies want to know that the patents that they receive or chase down are honest efforts to develop new ideas and products. However, that is no longer the world that we live in. Patents still mean something, sure -- but patent trolls have overrun the patent system, and major companies have been feeling the wrath.

But it isn't only major companies like Apple, Google and Samsung. There are so many companies out there now that patent things without any intent to develop a product. They simply get the patent and then use their legal protection to sue other companies into oblivion or to force a company to pay royalties to use it.

The system isn't completely broken yet, but the integrity has certainly been eroded to a significant degree. Intellectual property law is still an important aspect of the business world, and patents still serve a critical purpose. But the aggressive nature of patent trolls to pursue litigation over their patents, even though they have no intent to use the patent in the way it is intended, is disheartening. It also opens up an opportunity for the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to address this grey area.

Hopefully someday soon the patent troll problem will be resolved, but in the meantime, Pandora's Box has been opened. Companies have to be ready to legally fight back against patent trolls who look to impede their progress.
