Anti-meth campaign ad may be a violation of Frozen Trademark

Two years ago, the Montana Meth Project (MMP) got creative with a billboard ad campaign, but may have infringed on a Disney Trademark. Now that ad campaign has gone viral.

The billboard design features an illustration of a woman looks very much like Princess Elsa from the movie Frozen. The only difference is this woman is in handcuffs in front of a mug shot background, and looking much less glamorous than in the movie. The slogan says, "Meth, just let it go!" - the latter part being the title of a well-known song from the movie.

MMP is known nationally for its innovative, and sometimes gritty, advertising campaigns. Did they go too far this time and violate a Trademark?

The artwork for the billboard was created by a Montana teen for the MMP's Paint the State 2015 event, which has a focus on teenagers creating "public art with a focus on preventing methamphetamine use."

Despite the illustration looking very similar to Elsa, neither she nor the movie Frozen are mentioned in the ad. It still, however, uses the name of a Disney song and depicts a strikingly-similar but more run-down version of Elsa.  The billboard was up for less than two weeks in 2015, although due to the viral distribution it has gained new life.

The Walt Disney Company has not commented recently to any media outlets. It is unclear whether they have or will take any legal action for the Trademark infringement of one of their most popular movies and a hit song, especially now that the MMP ad has a worldwide audience.
