Patent troll targets Netflix, Soundcloud over offline mode

The popular streaming service Netflix is one of numerous companies that has been targeted by a patent troll in a lawsuit. Blackbird technologies is suing Netflix -- in addition to Starz, Soundcloud, Vimeo and other companies -- in response to the streaming companies development of an "offline" mode, one that allows people to download episodes or movies that they would have access to through the paid subscription service while connected to the internet. Users would then have access to those episodes or movies even when they aren't connected to the internet.

Blackbird is alleging that this feature authorizes content duplication and that these developments by Netflix and other companies violate their patent. Blackbird does not make any products or provide services, but they have patents and are looking to capitalize on that.

Patent trolls are a massive issue in the patent industry right now. They purposefully patent broad or vague ideas with the hopes that a company infringes upon their patent in the future. They then file a lawsuit with the hopes of a financial windfall. Between litigation and licensing, this is how patent trolls make their money. It's an unsavory practice, but it does work in our current system.

Being targeted by a patent troll can immediately throw people off, because there is an inherent feeling of injustice and confusion about someone suing over something they don't make or use. However, these are serious legal matters and if you are alleged to be in violation of a patent, you need to protect yourself.
